Introduction and History

Hello! my is Elizabeth Alderson I have been in this profession since 2004 and had worked for Strawberry Patch Children’s Centre since 2006. Now, after taking over the company at the North Otter Elementary location and renaming it “The Patch Kids Place Inc.,” which is built to provide important and quality care for children age range from thirty months years old to school age children finishing grade seven. We do our best to accommodate North Otter families with the quality care they deserve.

Our Philosophy

We believe that in the right environment a child’s natural curiosity and creativity leads to endless opportunities in gaining experience in knowledge and develop a love of learning through play. We provide that environment at The Patch Kids Place Inc. by making it a safe and nurturing place where your child will be encouraged to build, pretend, and create their way to exciting discoveries about the world around them.
At The Patch Kids Place Inc. each child will have a chance to grow socially, physically, intellectually cognitively, emotionally. Each child will have loads of learning opportunities adaption to fit his or her age, developmental stage, and learning style. In addition we provide your child with the care and education that will help them become happy, healthy lifelong learners.

Guidance And Discipline Policy

Every adult who cares for children has a responsibility to guide, correct, and socialize children toward appropriate behaviours. These adult actions often are called child guidance and discipline. Positive guidance and discipline are crucial because they promote children's self-control, teach children responsibility, and help children make thoughtful choices. The more effective caregivers are at encouraging appropriate child behaviours, the less time and effort adults will spend correcting children's misbehaviors.
Active guidance and discipline focus on the development of the child. They also preserve the child's self-esteem. Actions that insult or criticize are likely to cause children to view their caregivers negatively, which can prevent learning and can teach the child to be unkind to others. However, actions that acknowledge the child’s efforts and progress, no matter how slow or small, are likely to encourage healthy development. Teaching children self-discipline is a demanding skill. It requires patience, thoughtful attention, cooperation, and a good understanding of the child. The Patch Kids Place Inc. teachers will use only positive guidance techniques.

Before and After School
Program

Our Before and After school program provides quality childcare for children ages 5 to 12 years old.
Hours Of Operation
Monday through Friday 7:00 am. - 5:30 pm.

Our before and after school Program maintain  a flexibility to suit the children’s interests and what the day brings through play.

Your child will have a change to unwind after school with a variety of fun activities, in all inside and outside activities, or even find a quiet area to read a book or play games with a friend.

Before and after school programs allow more social time and more engagement with new and more people. This promotes cooperation, support, and respect for others. Kids in these programs are more likely to be included and feel like they're part of a group.

Daycare Program
During School Hours

Daycare During school hours program provides quality childcare for children ages 2.5 year olds to 5 year olds.
Hours Of Operation
Monday through Friday 8:40 am. - 1:55 pm.

Our curriculum for Daycare Program During School Hours follows the teachers lead and child centered approach. This means we teach planned themes and themes based on the interests we observe among the children. Each day we have a group time where the children are exposed to early numeracy, early literacy, and other kindergarten readiness skills to help in preparing children for kindergarten.
Children will also have the choice to participate in a daily planned art/craft activity as well. We believe that arts and crafts are all about the process not the product. When we are planning activities, we assess why we are planning this activity and what the children will learn, develop, or practice while engaging in the activity.

Our Team

Hello! My name is Elizabeth, but everyone calls me Liz. I was born in Vancouver and moved to Portugal when I was eight years old, returning to Canada in 1991 — and yes, I do speak fluent Portuguese.
I have always loved being around children. When I returned from Portugal, I worked a daytime job, but I knew it wasn’t the career I wanted. Babysitting had always brought me joy, and my cousins and family friends often asked me to care for their children. Over time, I realized that working with children was where my heart truly belonged, and that led me to become an Early Childhood Educator.
I have been an Early Childhood Educator since 2004 and have worked in preschool settings, Montessori preschools, and daycares. I spent nearly 16 years at Strawberry Patch Children’s Centre, and I truly love what I do. It fills my heart knowing that each day I have cared for, nurtured, and supported children while helping their families — a responsibility I consider one of the most important jobs in the world.
In my spare time, I enjoy reading, scrapbooking, and watching movies.

Lead Teacher Pre-K Program
Debbie Bjorknas

Hi, I’m Debbie. I have been an Early Childhood Educator for over 25 years, and I am passionate about providing the very best care to the children in our centre. I like to think of each child as my own, and I feel grateful to be part of their early learning journey.
I am a mother of two adult children and have lived in the North Otter area for 35 years, which has given me deep roots in this community.
In my spare time, I enjoy reading, camping with my husband, and savoring a hot black coffee. I’m also a big fan of author Diana Gabaldon.
I’m truly happy to be working with children and supporting their growth each day.

ECE Assistant and After Lead Teacher School Program
Alyscia Teljeur

I am new to the Early Childhood Education field, but I absolutely love it. My passion for working with children began early — in high school, I spent time helping at my auntie’s daycare, and I always looked forward to being there. I grew up surrounded by younger siblings, and by the age of twelve I was eager to start babysitting.
Before becoming a mother, I worked as a nanny and continued in that role until I had my first daughter. Today, as a mom of two girls (thirteen and seven years old), my love for supporting children’s growth has only deepened. I am now working toward my Early Childhood Educator Diploma, and I’m truly excited to continue building my career in this field.
In my spare time, I enjoy reading, drawing, and running when the weather cooperates. I love a good black coffee, and I’m a big fan of the TV sitcom Friends. I’m very happy to be working with children and feel grateful to be part of their early learning journey.

ECE Assistant and After School teacher
Mankirat Kaur

My name is Mankirat, and I have been working in childcare settings for the past two years as a Responsible Adult. I recently earned my Early Childhood Educator Assistant (ECEA) certification, and I am excited to continue supporting children in their learning, development, and overall well‑being.
Before entering the early childhood field, I completed a Diploma in Computer Information Technology from Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Richmond. Although I enjoyed my studies, my passion for working with children ultimately inspired me to pursue a career in early childhood education, where I feel truly fulfilled.
In my free time, I love going out, exploring new places, and spending quality time with my family.
